black lives matter statement


The Team Beaverton leadership team has been paying attention to the murders of Black people and the protests that have erupted in the last month. People are fed-up with the treatment of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) in this country and beyond. We, too, are fed-up. We’re angry about the actions of the police, the apparent lack of will of our government to make the significant changes necessary to address the inequities that continue to persist, and the lack of empathy shown by white people to the Black community who are expressing their outrage. Black lives matter and we need to make significant changes in this country so that that is reflected in our world.

Why is this relevant to Team Beaverton? Although it’s easy to think that COVID-19 isn’t about race, class, or immigrant status, if you look at the statistics, you will see that it is. BIPOC, and especially our Latino neighbors, are disproportionately affect by the virus. The reasons stem from a number of policies that have been in place for years. Team Beaverton is a community organization which is in a position to help those who have been impacted by the virus. In order to do that, we need to make it clear that we will treat them with respect and create a safe space for them. In order to be safe, we need to set the tone and create a welcoming, respectful environment.

Please know that we are not aware of anyone being disrespectful to anyone else in this group. However, we want to make sure that we are proactive about this subject and that we are publicly committing to these standards. We stand behind the following statements in order to create such an environment:

  • BIPOC are both welcome and valued in Team Beaverton

  • Expressions of solidarity on this page will be allowed

  • We will center the voices of BIPOC

  • If you are White, please humble yourself, be OK with making mistakes, accept feedback graciously, and learn from your mistakes

  • Focus on impact, not intention (you can still inflict harm while having good intentions; please be prepared to learn from those experiences)

  • We are not colorblind, as it erases the experiences of BIPOC

  • We will delete racist videos and memes

  • Those who are unwilling to listen and learn from their mistakes risk removal from the group

  • We will prioritize the safety of BIPOC
